A major scandal has come to light involving the Islamabad Customs’ Anti-Smuggling Squad, allegedly linked to a cigarette smuggling cover-up worth millions of rupees. According to sources, vehicles loaded with smuggled cigarettes were seized, but only a small quantity—around 450 cigarette packets—was officially recorded in one of the cases, raising serious questions about internal collusion.
Under the directive of the Collector of Customs Islamabad, a crackdown on smugglers was underway. During this operation, Inspector Raja Tariq of the Anti-Smuggling Squad reportedly received a tip-off about a vehicle transporting smuggled cigarettes. Acting on the tip, the squad pursued and successfully intercepted the vehicle.
However, according to credible sources, efforts were made to settle the matter between customs officials and the smugglers. Eventually, only a partial seizure—450 cigarette packets—was officially documented, and a case was registered while the alleged suspect was reportedly released.
When approached for comments, Inspector Raja Tariq stated, “I did seize cigarettes, but I have no involvement in any such deal. I’ve heard Inspector Abbasi was involved in that case.”
Insider sources further revealed that a formal complaint has been lodged with senior customs officials against one of the inspectors, and an internal inquiry has now been initiated.
This case highlights potential deep-rooted corruption within enforcement units and raises concerns about the integrity of ongoing anti-smuggling operations.
