A high-level delegation from Iraq visited the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Headquarters in Islamabad as part of ongoing efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation in the field of border management.

The visit was facilitated by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) under the framework of Danish funded Rights Based Border Management project.

The delegation was warmly welcomed by Jan Muhammad, Additional Director General (ADG) FIA Headquarters, who provided an overview of FIA’s mandate as Pakistan’s premier investigative agency with responsibilities ranging from immigration control to combating organised crime.

During the visit, the delegation was briefed on the work of FIA’s specialised units. At the Risk Analysis Unit (RAU), Director Immigration explained how intelligence-led risk management is being applied to identify and mitigate threats at Pakistan’s borders. The delegation then toured the Forensic Laboratory, where the Director Forensic Lab and Deputy Director demonstrated the lab’s crucial role in verifying travel documents, detecting forgery, and supporting litigation in travel-related offences. The delegation was also apprised about the role of FIA Academy in the capacity building of its personnel.

As part of the programme, the Iraqi delegation also visited the Islamabad International Airport to witness first-hand the enhancements made under FIA’s next-generation border control systems. The team was given a detailed briefing on the operations of the Second Line Border Control, which plays a vital role in detecting fraudulent travel documents and supporting front-line officers.

The Head of the Iraqi delegation expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and comprehensive technical briefing, noting that the visit had provided valuable insights into Pakistan’s modern border management practices. He reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to further strengthening cooperation between the border management agencies of both countries. The delegation also appreciated the role of ICMPD in facilitating the exchange of knowledge and good practices between Iraq and Pakistan.
