LONDON MONITORING DESK
In a historic move, the Palestinian flag was raised for the first time over the newly recognized Palestinian Embassy in London, following the United Kingdom’s official recognition of the State of Palestine. The flag-hoisting ceremony marked a symbolic and diplomatic milestone in the Palestinian national struggle.
According to international news agencies, the ceremony took place shortly after the Palestinian mission in London was formally granted embassy status. The dignified event was attended by officials, diplomats, and supporters of the Palestinian cause.
Addressing the gathering, Palestinian Ambassador Dr. Husam Zomlot hailed the moment as a “milestone in the history of our national struggle.” He expressed gratitude to the British government for its courageous and principled stance, stating that the recognition and elevation of the mission to full embassy status represents not only an act of historical justice but also a renewed commitment to a future based on freedom, dignity, and fundamental human rights.
“The significance of this brave step by the UK government is magnified by the current situation,” Ambassador Zomlot said. “Palestinian people are enduring relentless bombardments in Gaza, daily oppression in the West Bank, and the ongoing theft of land and state-sponsored violence.”
He further highlighted the symbolism of the Palestinian flag, explaining that each color represents a chapter in the Palestinian story: black for grief and oppression, white for hope, green for the land of Palestine, and red for the sacrifices of its people.
The ceremony comes on the same day as a major international summit is underway at the United Nations Headquarters, co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and France. During the summit, several Western nations are expected to formally recognize the State of Palestine.
This moment marks a potential turning point in international diplomacy concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, signaling growing global momentum toward a two-state solution.
