President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, extended heartfelt congratulations to journalists, editors, publishers, and all individuals dedicated to the noble profession of journalism on the occasion of National Newspaper Readership Day.
In his message marking the day, the President commended the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) for its annual initiative to promote a culture of newspaper reading across the country. “I firmly believe that an informed citizenry is the cornerstone of a vibrant democracy,” he said. “When people have access to credible information, they are empowered to make better decisions not just in elections, but in every sphere of life.”
President Zardari reflected on the historic role of newspapers in Pakistan, stating that from the days of the Pakistan Movement until today, print media has played a central role in shaping national discourse, raising awareness, exposing injustices, and upholding the public’s right to know. He lauded generations of journalists for their invaluable service and dedication.
Highlighting the evolving media landscape, the President expressed concern over the declining role of professional editors in the age of social media, which has led to the proliferation of misinformation and propaganda. He emphasized that the values of responsible journalism upheld by newspapers are now more critical than ever.
“Newspapers remain symbols of trust in today’s fast-paced digital era, offering depth, context, and thoughtful analysis,” he stated. “They not only inform readers about what has happened, but also help them understand why it matters.”
Acknowledging the challenges facing the print media industry, President Zardari expressed optimism that Pakistani newspapers could survive and thrive—not through government aid or corporate sponsorship, but by continuing to earn the trust and loyalty of readers, as they have done for generations.
He urged educational institutions to instill the habit of newspaper reading among students, and called on the print media to uphold the highest standards of ethics, impartiality, and responsibility.
Reaffirming his belief in the essential role of a free press in a democracy, President Zardari stressed that this freedom must always be exercised with truth, balance, and justice. He concluded with the hope that newspaper readership in Pakistan will continue to grow, contributing to a more informed, thoughtful, and democratic society.
