NADRA Launches Automated System to Streamline Birth and Death Registration Across Pakistan

In a significant move towards digital governance and enhanced citizen services, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), in collaboration with provincial governments, has launched a new automated system to streamline the registration of births and deaths across the country.

According to an official statement, this initiative is being implemented under the directives of the Federal Minister for Interior and is part of a broader government agenda aimed at improving registration services and eliminating inefficiencies in the system.

The ongoing reforms are being rolled out under the National Biometric and Registration Policy Framework, approved by the Prime Minister on January 1 of this year. The framework aims to establish a unified, technology-based mechanism for the timely registration of vital events nationwide.

As part of a pilot project, NADRA has successfully deployed modern digital registration systems in over 50 hospitals and healthcare centers across the country. These include major facilities such as PIMS, CDA, and FG hospitals in Islamabad, Lady Aitchison Hospital in Lahore, and several hospitals and clinics in Quetta, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Sindh.

The new system enables hospitals and healthcare centers to be directly connected to NADRA, allowing for instant notification of birth and death events. Once an event is recorded, NADRA sends a notification to the parents or next of kin via mobile application and SMS, guiding them to complete the official registration at their respective Union Council.

The early results of this initiative have been promising. So far, NADRA has received over 4,000 birth notifications and 407 death notifications through the new mechanism.

Citizens can now easily register vital events either through the NADRA mobile app or by visiting their nearest Union Council. Initially launched in three districts of Punjab, this facility is expected to expand across the province soon. Plans are also underway to extend the system to other public and private hospitals nationwide.

Officials stated that once provincial governments finalize their preparations, direct registration services will become operational at Union Councils, ensuring full integration between healthcare institutions, NADRA, and local government departments.

This initiative marks a major step in Pakistan’s digital transformation journey, aiming to reduce delays, prevent data manipulation, and strengthen the country’s national identity and population record system.
