Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has emphasized the strategic importance of tourism for Pakistan’s economy, describing it as a vital tool for economic diversification, job creation, and international connectivity.
He made these remarks on Thursday during a meeting with a delegation of the Malam Jabba International Advisory Board at the Parliament House.
According to a statement issued by the Senate Secretariat, Chairman Gilani highlighted that tourism is not just a commercial activity, but a powerful bridge for cultural harmony, mutual understanding, and people-to-people connections among nations.
He stressed that Pakistan’s tourism sector holds immense potential not only to promote the country’s positive image globally but also to empower local communities and drive inclusive development.
Prominent national and international figures attended the meeting and discussed Pakistan’s tourism prospects and opportunities for sustainable growth. Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change, Senator Sherry Rehman, was also present.
Chairman Gilani welcomed Lord Aamer Sarfraz of Kensington, Member of the House of Lords, and commended his role in strengthening Pakistan-UK relations. He referred to Lord Sarfraz as a true friend of Pakistan, whose efforts have deepened goodwill and cooperation between the two countries.
He also acknowledged the presence of General Patrick Sanders, appreciating his leadership and insight as a valuable asset to the Advisory Board.
Praising the efforts of the Malam Jabba International Advisory Board, Chairman Gilani said Pakistan has witnessed a notable rise in international tourist arrivals, reflecting growing confidence in the sector. He emphasized that domestic tourism is also thriving, with Pakistan offering some of the world’s most breathtaking natural landscapes.
He called for upgrading infrastructure, accessibility, service quality, and facilities to reinforce Pakistan’s global tourism identity. Describing Malam Jabba as an exemplary destination, he noted that it blends natural beauty, adventure sports, and cultural experiences in alignment with sustainable development goals.
The Chairman stressed that the Senate views tourism as a strategic pillar of national progress and will continue supporting its advancement through legislation, institutional reforms, and parliamentary diplomacy. He assured the delegation of the Senate’s full cooperation in addressing challenges faced by the sector.
“Malam Jabba is a reflection of Pakistan’s real potential – a symbol of innovation, sustainability, and national pride,” he added. Chairman Gilani also invited UK investors to explore Pakistan’s tourism opportunities, highlighting the role of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) in providing a streamlined platform for foreign investment.
Senator Sherry Rehman echoed these sentiments, noting that tourism enables cultural exchange and that significant work has already been done to promote this sector.
On the occasion, Ambassador of the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference (ISC), Ms. Misbah Khar, informed the delegation that Chairman Gilani had been elected as the Founding Chair of the ISC. She announced that the upcoming ISC conference will be held in Islamabad in November 2025, with participation from Speakers of 45 countries under the theme “Peace, Security, and Development.”
This engagement reflects Pakistan’s growing commitment to sustainable tourism, global dialogue, and cross-cultural collaboration.
