Punjab Government Launches Major Crackdown on Illegal Arms; Drone Policing and New Regulations Announced

Lahore (Staff Reporter)

In a fourth consecutive extraordinary meeting on law and order, chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the Punjab government approved significant measures to make the province weapon-free.

The meeting approved the introduction of drone policing, integrated security measures, and new arms regulation laws. A comprehensive review and strict scrutiny of one million licensed firearms across the province was also ordered.

The government announced the forthcoming Punjab Surrender of Illegal Arms Act 2025, which will be implemented in three phases. Individuals in possession of illegal firearms have been given 15 days to surrender them. Additionally, licensed firearms across Punjab will undergo thorough verification, including confirmation of the owner and the issuing authority. Federal license holders will also be subject to scrutiny, in coordination with the federal government.

Under the new regulations, only police personnel and registered security guards will be permitted to possess firearms. Private security companies will be formally registered with clear operational guidelines, and their personnel will be connected to the Punjab Police Helpline 15.

To enhance instant policing, a dedicated Standard Section will be established within the Punjab Police. A drone policing pilot project will soon be launched in Lahore to ensure rapid, organized, and digital responses to crimes and emergencies. The system will allow drones to reach crime scenes immediately upon receiving alerts, enabling real-time tracking of criminals. The initiative will later be expanded across the province.

Moreover, advanced weapons scanners will be installed at 14 key entry and exit points in Punjab. Strict measures have been approved against arms smuggling, with offenders facing up to 14 years in prison. To discourage a gun culture, the annual license fee for firearms will be increased by 100 percent.
