The official price of sugar remains largely unavailable in the open market, as retail prices across various cities of Pakistan have surged to as high as Rs220 per kilogram, according to market reports.

In Lahore, sugar is being sold between Rs190 and Rs220 per kilogram, while in Peshawar, the retail price has reached Rs210 per kilogram. In Quetta, sugar is being sold at Rs185 per kilogram in retail markets and Rs180 per kilogram in wholesale markets.

In Rawalpindi, despite the government’s fixed price of Rs179 per kilogram, sugar is being sold between Rs181 and Rs190 per kilogram in local shops. The sale of sugar at government rates has become increasingly difficult due to limited availability.

President of the Kiryana (Grocery) Association, Saleem Pervaiz Butt, said that retailers are barely able to sell sugar even at Rs185 per kilogram, while authorities are imposing fines for selling above official rates. He added that the market is facing both supply shortages and heavy penalties, warning that if sugar is not supplied in adequate quantities, retailers may be forced to suspend sales altogether.
