Iranian authorities re-arrested Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist Narges Mohammadi on Friday, according to her foundation. She was detained by Iranian security and police officials during a memorial event for Khosrow Ali-Kerdi, who was recently found dead in his office.

Mohammadi, one of Iran’s most prominent human rights lawyers, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023. She has spent much of the past two decades in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison, where critics of the government are held.

In December 2024, her imprisonment was temporarily suspended for three weeks to allow her to recover from surgery, but she was expected to be returned to prison shortly thereafter. Mohammadi is serving a cumulative 31-year prison sentence and faces charges related to national security violations and spreading anti-state propaganda.

Despite her imprisonment, Mohammadi has remained active over the past year, continuing to raise her voice on global platforms about the severe human rights situation in Iran.
