The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has issued an alert for WhatsApp users, warning them about potential hacking threats and advising immediate steps to avoid unexpected situations.
In its advisory, the NCCIA informed users that if they lose access to their WhatsApp account or suspect that someone else is using it, they should immediately take action by re-registering the account.
The agency advised users to uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp, then enter their phone number to log in. A six-digit verification code will be sent via SMS, which should be entered immediately. Once the code is entered, WhatsApp will automatically log out the hacker’s device, as the application can remain active on only one mobile phone at a time.
The NCCIA further explained that users should not panic if WhatsApp asks them to wait for seven days. This situation may occur if the hacker has enabled two-step verification and the original user does not know the PIN. However, once the SMS verification code has been entered, the hacker is logged out and cannot access the account.
The agency reassured users that during the waiting period, no one can use the account or read messages, ensuring the safety of user data.
