Russian Ambassador Albert Khuriev visited the National University of Modern Languages (NUML) on Monday, where he met with Rector Major General (Retd) Shahid Mahmood Kayani to discuss enhancing Russian language education, academic exchanges, and cultural cooperation between Russia and Pakistan.
During the meeting, both sides explored long-term and short-term initiatives to strengthen collaboration. Under the long-term plan, Russian language education is set to be introduced in Pakistan from primary to higher secondary levels, supported by certified Russian instructors provided by the Russian Federation. This initiative aims to establish strong linguistic foundations while promoting cultural understanding between the two countries.
The short-term plan focuses on improving Russian language instruction for 11th and 12th grade students to facilitate better guidance regarding higher education opportunities, scholarships, and admissions in Russia.
Rector Kayani emphasized NUML’s commitment to promoting Russian language and culture, noting that the university is well-positioned to expand Russian language education provided authentic Russian teachers are available. He also highlighted that Pakistani students can pursue higher education in Russia after completing their undergraduate studies in Pakistan.
Following the discussions, both parties signed an Act of Acceptance for the provision of Russian books and educational materials, symbolizing the continuation of long-standing collaboration between the Russian Embassy and NUML. The Russian Embassy officially handed over the books and printed materials to the university.
The meeting concluded with Rector Kayani presenting a commemorative shield to Ambassador Khuriev. The delegation included DG NUML Brigadier Muhammad Rafiq Khan, Director Academics Dr. Nadeem Talib, Dean Faculty of Languages Dr. Jameel Asghar Jami, and Director NILO Dr. Atif.
