“Modern Punjab” Initiative Transforms Vegetable and Fruit Markets, Launches New Era of Shopping for Public

Lahore (Bureau Report)

The Punjab government has introduced modern fruit and vegetable markets under the “Modern Punjab” initiative, marking a new era of shopping for the public. The upgraded markets now feature fully operational water filtration plants for traders and buyers, new staff, and an organized waste collection system.

Across 188 modern markets in Punjab, clean and functional toilets are now available, help desks have been established for customers, and rate boards are prominently displayed. Over 266,000 street lights have been activated, and green waste is being converted into biogas and poultry feed. Drainage systems have been restored, and manhole covers installed to improve hygiene and safety.

For the first time in Punjab, a tracking-on-wheel system has been implemented to monitor the supply and demand of vegetables and fruits. Every incoming truck is linked with the Safe City Authority. Modern markets are planned in Pakpattan, Kasur, Sahiwal, Mian Channu, Sheikhupura, and Mandi Bahauddin. Additionally, a supply chain system has been established to provide affordable fruits and vegetables, and wholesale rates are now accessible to buyers.

Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz has instructed the adoption of modern farming techniques for off-season vegetables and ordered strict action against price-control violators, including termination and imprisonment. She also approved merit-based recruitment of secretaries in market committees through the Public Service Commission.

Maryam Nawaz stated that the mafia culture in Punjab has been eradicated and emphasized the government’s commitment to providing affordable essentials like bread and flour. She also announced surprise inspections of fruit and vegetable markets to ensure compliance and efficiency.
