The administration of former US President Donald Trump has announced a major Christmas-time incentive for undocumented immigrants, offering financial assistance and free travel to those who voluntarily leave the United States before the end of the year.
According to the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), undocumented migrants who register for self-departure through the CBP Home app and leave the country voluntarily will receive $3,000 along with a free airline ticket to their home country. DHS stated that individuals taking advantage of the offer will also be exempted from potential civil fines and penalties related to unlawful stay.
Officials noted that the incentive amount is three times higher than the $1,000 offer announced earlier in May, reflecting the administration’s effort to accelerate voluntary departures during the holiday season and reduce enforcement-related costs. DHS described the CBP Home app-based return process as fast, free, and simple, with the government handling all travel arrangements after registration.
The department warned that migrants who do not avail themselves of this offer may face arrest and forced deportation, along with a permanent ban on returning to the United States. US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem also urged undocumented immigrants to take advantage of the opportunity, cautioning that enforcement actions would intensify otherwise.
It is worth noting that the CBP app was originally introduced during the Biden administration for asylum interview scheduling but has since been relaunched by the Trump team with a revised purpose focused on voluntary returns.
