University of Lahore, Alleged Collusion with Police in 21-Year-Old Fatima’s Suicide Attempt Case, Attempt to Suppress Incident; Police Divert Investigation

Lahore (Bureau Report):

A 21-year-old student, Fatima, who attempted suicide at the University of Lahore, has regained consciousness and has been taken off the ventilator. According to doctors, Fatima has also communicated with her family and is now breathing independently without assistance. Doctors reported that her Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) level was recorded at 14-15, while a team of neurosurgeons is reviewing the possibility of surgery related to her spinal cord.

Meanwhile, in connection with this incident at the University of Lahore, the police are reportedly attempting to redirect the investigation into the suicide attempt. Police sources claim that the University of Lahore allegedly settled matters with the police, after which contradictory statements have started to emerge in order to divert the investigation. According to sources, on the day the incident occurred, the police initially stated that Fatima’s mobile phone had been seized and the investigation was ongoing. Based on the mobile records, the police initially reported that she had spoken to her brother, but they have now shifted their stance, claiming that a young man has been taken into custody. However, further investigation can only proceed after Fatima provides her formal statement.

Investigative sources claim that mobile phone records suggest Fatima wanted to marry a friend, but her family was opposed, indicating the case may involve a love marriage dispute. Sources further allege that the University of Lahore coordinated with the police to divert attention and clear the university of responsibility. However, police investigation into the matter and the marriage-related dispute can only continue once the student provides her statement, and the police are currently awaiting her testimony.

It is worth noting that a few days earlier, a male student at the University of Lahore had also committed suicide, and the university administration reportedly suppressed the investigation, with the official report yet to be released.

Meanwhile, this marks a second suicide attempt at the University of Lahore involving 21-year-old Fatima. Police sources allege that the university previously resolved matters with the local police regarding the earlier male student’s suicide and suppressed that report, and it is now reportedly attempting to do the same in Fatima’s case. On the other hand, students of the University of Lahore have staged protests against the university administration, accusing it of attempting to cover up the incident, noting that the previous suicide case at the same university was also suppressed.

The Registrar of the University of Lahore, in a press conference, attempted to label 21-year-old Fatima as mentally unstable. However, students strongly rejected the university administration’s stance. Sources claim that the University of Lahore has temporarily closed the campus following Fatima’s suicide attempt to prevent students from giving statements to the media or anyone else, and the university will reopen only after the situation is clarified.
