Trump Announces New Tariffs on Imported Goods Starting October 1

WASHINGTON MONITORING DESK

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced sweeping new tariffs on a range of imported goods, effective October 1, targeting products from various countries in an effort to boost domestic manufacturing and protect national security interests.

In a series of social media posts, Trump declared that a 100% tariff will be imposed on any branded or patented pharmaceutical products imported into the United States, unless the manufacturing company is actively building a pharmaceutical plant within the country.

In a separate post the same day, Trump added that kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and related products will face a 50% tariff, while padded furniture imports will be subject to a 30% tariff. He described the widespread import of these goods as “unfair to the United States” and emphasized the need to protect domestic industries and manufacturing capacity.

Furthermore, a 25% tariff will be levied on all heavy trucks manufactured outside the United States, also beginning October 1. Trump stated that keeping American truck manufacturers financially strong was “critical to national security and other strategic interests.”

“These tariffs are not just about trade — they are about protecting America’s workers and ensuring our supply chains are not at the mercy of foreign nations,” Trump said.

The announcement comes as the U.S. Supreme Court is set to review in October whether the Trump administration (or any administration) can use emergency powers to impose broad-based tariffs on foreign goods under the justification of national security.

The proposed tariffs, if implemented, could have significant implications for global trade and are likely to spark concerns among international trading partners and domestic importers alike.
