FBR Clarifies: No Extension in Income Tax Return Filing Deadline for Tax Year 2025

ISLAMABAD STAFF REPORTER

he Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has categorically denied reports regarding any extension in the deadline for filing income tax returns for Tax Year 2025, stating that the last date remains September 30, 2025.

In a statement issued on Monday, the FBR spokesperson addressed circulating false and misleading news on various media platforms that suggested an extension in the return filing date, with some even linking it to the recent flooding in certain areas.

Majority of Taxpayers Not Affected by Floods

The spokesperson clarified that the majority of taxpayers reside in areas unaffected by floods, and they have had ample time to fulfill their national tax obligations. Therefore, there is no justification for extending the deadline.

He also rejected reports about performance issues with FBR’s IRIS e-filing system, stating that the IRIS portal is fully functional and operating without interruption. Taxpayers can conveniently file their returns using the newly simplified return form.

Late Filers Will Face Penalties

The FBR strongly warned that those who fail to file their returns by the deadline will be considered late filers and will be subjected to penalties in accordance with the law.

However, the spokesperson mentioned that in exceptional circumstances, taxpayers facing serious hardship may apply for a 15-day extension, subject to the approval of the relevant committee and payment of due taxes.

FBR Urges Timely Compliance

The FBR has urged all eligible taxpayers to act responsibly and file their income tax returns honestly and accurately before the September 30 deadline to avoid legal action.

“There will be no blanket extension. Filing your tax return on time is not just a legal obligation but a national duty,” the spokesperson emphasized.
