The Punjab government and the private sector have reached a landmark agreement to purchase wheat from farmers at a rate of Rs. 3,500 per maund, ensuring fair compensation for growers. The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting on wheat chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
During the meeting, the Agriculture Department presented a detailed briefing on wheat cultivation and procurement planning. Officials confirmed that Punjab has no shortage of wheat, with ample reserves currently in stock. A comprehensive wheat procurement plan for the upcoming year has also been prepared.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting farmers, stating, “Our farmers are like our brothers — we will never abandon them.” She highlighted several unprecedented initiatives by her administration, including the distribution of 1,000 free tractors to wheat farmers — a first in Pakistan’s history.
She also noted that wheat growers in Punjab have been provided with billions of rupees worth of agricultural inputs through the Kisan Card program. Additionally, all types of fertilizers are available in sufficient quantity at government-controlled prices across the province.
The move aims to strengthen the agricultural sector, ensure food security, and empower farmers through fair pricing and access to essential farming tools and inputs.
